Given the opportunity to learn students are making growth in literacy skills AND behavior.⠀

Maggie (a high school Junior) and her first grade friend are reviewing words. Research tells us that learning to read is not a natural process and students need explicit instruction. We find this to be true across the board. Given the opportunity to learn students are making growth in literacy skills AND behavior.⠀

"Research on early literacy intervention programs has demonstrated that children struggling to learn to read and write can make significant progress with the appropriate instructional support." -Designing Early Literacy Programs by Lea M. McGee and Donald J. Richgels.

Research in Action

The first grader in this photo is a perfect example of the importance of explicit literacy instruction at an early age. She has been in our partner program at the MLK Center since she started kindergarten. She completed kindergarten reading on grade level and continues to track on her reading benchmarks. Through appropriate instruction, we are able to support students before they fall behind.
